Navigating New Jersey divorce and social media

On behalf of | Mar 31, 2023 | Divorce

There are plenty of studies out there that indicate that social media often harms marriages. New Jersey residents may not realize that social media often makes divorces even harder than they already are. If you’re dealing with a divorce, remember these social media tips.

Consider logging off

Social media is a vital part of life for many people, but it’s not a bad idea to log off completely during your divorce. Not only does not post on social media give you more time to focus on self-care during your divorce, but it also helps you avoid posting anything that may trigger your ex.

If you can’t say anything nice…

If you must remain on social media, ensure you don’t use your social media channels to vent about your ex. This is even more important if any children are involved in your divorce, as bashing your child’s other parents is a terrible idea. Remember, if you can’t post anything nice, don’t post anything at all.

Boost those privacy levels

While you should certainly set your privacy settings to the strictest possible levels, there are other steps you can take to increase your privacy. Ask your friends and family members to avoid tagging you in posts until the divorce plays out. This helps you maintain your privacy at a time when an angry ex may try to track you.

Ditch the relationship status

While some platforms let you set a relationship status, resist the urge to use the “it’s complicated” or “divorced” options. Your closest friends and family members already know about your marital problems. Advertising them on social media doesn’t accomplish anything.

Having a network of support during a divorce is important. However, you mustn’t advertise your marital issues on social media.
